My First Attempt At Studded Nails

Hey There Polished People!

Isn’t it funny how one person’s trash is another’s treasure? I know this first hand because, especially when it comes to teaching stuff (books, activities for kids, classroom organizational stuff), if someone’s giving it away, I’m picking it up. I’m the WORST! And you know what? I don’t even have my own classroom! Haha. Oh the irony!!! I end up collecting all this classroom stuff, keep it around thinking “when I get my classroom it will be so great to have!” and then when I inevitably don’t have my own classroom in another year I give it away to Goodwill. Luckily I don’t have the space to keep much of what I don’t use so it’s not like I have a warehouse of now defunct classroom supplies, but if I did… it could happen. I know Cynthia is probably HORRIFIED at the idea of all that clutter. Anyway, one day right before Christmas, my husband got a package in the mail with one of my presents inside. When he opened it (out of my view) he was like, “Ohhhhh this sucks!! This is so lame!! Ughhhh do you just want me to give this to you now? This is ridiculous.” Naturally, I was like UH SURE!! Give me my presentssssss! 😉 So he handed me this tiny little plastic baggie and guess what was in it? NAIL STUDS!!! I was so excited and he was just dumbfounded as to why I was so hyped over this minuscule baggie of metal pieces. I guess he thought they’d be bigger? Anyway, I was hyped and here he thought it was a total bust. Worked out well for me though because I got an early present! 😉 Would you like to see what I did with my first set of studs?? I wore them on New Year’s Eve. Let’s see em!

Happy New Year!! :) Cheers!

Happy New Year!! 🙂 Cheers!

How To Get These Nails:

  1. Basecoat. Don’t skip this step. I used SH Hard As Nails.
  2. Paint your nails with ChG Refresh-Mint. I used my regular three coats.
  3. Apply a coat of Seche Vite and allow your nails to dry thoroughly.
  4. When your nails are dry and non-squooshable, use Konad special silver polish and BM 314 to stamp this scrolly, flowery design on each of your nails.
  5. Optional: Apply a coat of Seche Vite between stamping and adding the studs. I did not, but if you’re worried about smearing your stamping you might want to have a layer of tc in between the stamping and the clear topcoat used to stick the studs down.
  6. One nail at a time, apply a stripe of clear non-quick dry topcoat (I used regular OPI clear top coat) down the center of your nail. Have your studs out and right side up before you do this.
  7. Quickly touch the clear stripe on your nail with the tip of a cuticle stick, then touch it to the top of a stud and place the stud on your nail.
  8. Repeat step 6 for each stud until you have a line of studs from near your cuticle to the free edge of your nail.  Work quickly so the top coat stays wet, but if it dries out, just apply a little more.
  9. Repeat steps 6-8 for each nail.
  10. Make sure all the studs are pressed down well. I used the flat part of my cuticle stick to do this.
  11. Apply a thick coat of Seche Vite over the top of your nails and the studs. Be a little careful with this because you don’t want to get bubbles in your top coat. You can avoid bubbles by not swiping the polish brush over the same spot a bunch of times. Let a lot of topcoat be on your brush and kinda let it drip onto your nail and then spread it out with the brush, instead of stroking it on like you’d usually do. You want the topcoat to get all around the studs, on top of the studs and then of course on the rest of your nails. I’m making this sound harder than it is, just be a little mindful of how your topcoat is going on your nails.
  12. Allow your nails to dry thoroughly and then show them off to your friends. They’re gonna be impressed! Trust me!! 🙂
  13. This isn’t part of the instructions, but I have sneak in somewhere to tell you- these nails with the mint polish and the light silver print matched my NYE shirt PERFECTLY!! If you follow me on Instagram (Nicole_423) or Twitter (@polishmeplease) you’ll know that I’m not lying. I love that shirt and I love these nails! 😀

I am really not one for 3D nail art. Those pictures of people with a thousand bows and jewels and all kinds of things on their nails are interesting in their own artsy way, but just aren’t for me. Studs are TECHNICALLY 3D I guess, but they’re flat enough that they don’t give me that crazynailart feeling. 🙂 Are you a fan of studs? Do you like the sculpted 3D nails? Let me know what your stance is and how you liked my New Year’s Eve nails! 🙂 Thank you all for reading and commenting and till next time- Happy Polishing!! 😀

  1. Oh so cute! I can’t find studs so I make dots with a metallic/foil polish to fake them. I am not a fan of anything that sticks up on my nail or can catch/snag on things. Are they hard to remove? I have a hard time getting rhinestones off so I imagine studs would be the same. Although I do not like the 3D Hime gyaru nail art, I do like the studs. I love that color green. That was one of my favorites from last spring’s collection!

    • Thanks!! I just use dotting sometimes to for the studded look. That works, too. 🙂 These would be a little hard to remove if I’d covered my whole nail but since I just did a little strip it was no problemo. I actually didn’t even foil them and just used a cotton ball to remove all the nail polish and then I kinda snapped the studs off w my cuticle stick. I bet if I’d foiled if they’d come right off. If I do more prolific studded nails I’ll definitely do that. 🙂

  2. Yay for early presents!! They’re the best kind, honestly. I’ve been really wanting to try out nail studs like this but never seem to ever look for them online or actually order any. I really like this look though, plus I think the stamping gives it a little something extra. It’s very delicate.

I’m an office supply hoarder and have half full, partially used notebooks all over the place. I just can’t seem to get over the idea of wasting the paper. Same with pens. What do I do with them? Toss them in a bin? I can’t seem to do that but they aren’t something you can really give to goodwill. Why haven’t you got your own classroom yet, btw?

    • Haha! I have plenty of notebooks too that I don’t want to get rid of, and also PENS!!! Pens and pens and pens!! I actually went through all the notebooks and even pens and gave/threw a TON away! It was hard but great. 🙂
I don’t have my own classroom because I sub cuz the job market is so bad. I’m actually looking for other (non-teaching) work because I’m just tired of subbing and always looking for work.
      Thanks about the nails!! 😀

    • Thank you! I liked how that added a little somethin somethin under the studs. 🙂 Plus it helped it match my top cuz it had a bit of sparkly threading running through it 🙂

  3. these nails looks perfect. I saw them in another picture you posted..!!
for NYE i was using a neon fishtail.. :))) i didn’t upload it to he blog because it was a repeated manicure, but i was in the beach and the beach feels like neon..

  4. I feel like when ive put gems, i have to put like 3 coats of top coat because i just want to pick at them, lol! These are re ally pretty, i love the contrast and thats cool they r flatter. Very pretty! ❤

    • Thank you! I was wondering how they would be and if they’d stay on but mine stuck like superglue!! They were pretty flat though, and I pushed then down into the polish and I had really thick seche (an old bottle) so it only took two coats and it was pretty well encapsulated.

  5. I’m really turned off by crazy elaborate 3D nails….a lot of the times it just looks tacky. I do like rhinestones, beads, and studs though to an extent of course. I like them in subtle ways, not crazy all over the place lets fit as much crap on my nail as possible. So yes I do like your studded nails. Your poor husband though lol, at least what he thought was a bust turned out to make you scream for joy.
Btw, what size studs are those? I’m contemplating purchasing studs and/or rhinestones to try it out, but I’m totally clueless on figuring out sizes. I don’t want chunky ones or ones that are too big to lay flat.

    • To me studs don’t count as crazy nail art… Well at least not small ones like these. 🙂 I think these must be like 2-3 mm…? They’re about the size of a small dotting tool’s dot. I’ll measure them later and get back to you. I held off on replying till I could measure them and as you can see… I still didn’t. I’ll do that this afternoon. 🙂

  6. Oh wow i love how you nails look, its a great design. Not bad at all for the first attempt!!
I really want to try something like this soon, never tried it before. 🙂

    • Thanks! I’m glad you “get” what I’m trying to say. Haha. You never know if it translates or if people are like, “Dude, that chick is WEEEEEIRD!!” 😉 I mean, you can think that too, but as long as you ALSO think I’m funny it’s totally ok. 🙂 Also- thank you about the nails!! I’m glad the stamp and studs worked out instead of looking like a total disastermess.

    • I really want some of those squarish studs. These are seriously all I have as far as studs, rhinestones, anything go. I do have some gleequins I won from one of Amanda’s giveaways but that’s it. Why don’t I order any??? Idk!! You should too! 🙂 And last but not least- THANKS!

  7. Did you ever find out what Daniel was expecting? I think these are nice studs…not too big, mostly flat…he did a good job unknowingly!
I like how these are “studded,” yet super-feminine! Did they last until you took them off?

    • I don’t know!! I mean, did he think they were gonna be the size of thumbtacks or what?? I thought there were prefect. They’re just what I needed to try studs out. Thanks about the nails. Yes- they lasted forever. I bet I could have warn them for weeks if the edges wouldn’t be a mess and all grown out. I was surprised with how well they stuck down. There were lots of times I felt them make contact or catch on something and expected to lose one but nope! They stuck like glue! 🙂

  8. This is actually stunning and I love that you put in a step by step. I don’t have studs but I have these massive glitter hexes and I could never figure out how to “cover” them after applying them TO my nail! So now I know 😀
I love the colour you used, it is gorgeous!

    • Hey Maira, thanks for commenting. I do NOT currently have a YouTube page for my nail designs but I’ve been considering it recently. Check back here sporadically and if I start a channel I’ll let you all know 🙂
