Lucky Hearts St. Patrick’s Day Nails

Hey There Polished People!

Well, as you probably know, it’s St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday the 17th. In preparation for that you all should be drinking plenty of water, getting your green garb ready and painting your nails green for the big day, right? I think eating a banana beforehand is supposed to help stave off a hangover, too, so you may want to try that as well. 🙂

Officially speaking, St. Patrick’s Day is the celebration of Christianity being introduced to Ireland. It’s actually a public holiday in Ireland and a few other countries but here in the US at least, it’s a day where you get pinched if you’re not wearing green, decorate with rainbows, pots of gold and leprechauns and drink green beer. I decorated my nails with four-leaf-clovers as you’ll see in a second, but apparently the three-leaf-clover is a better symbol because that is what the actual St. Patrick used to explain the holy trinity to the people of Ireland. At least that’s the truth according to Wikipedia, and you know they can’t post anything online that isn’t true! ;p Shall we see my simple nails for today?

Lucky Hearts St. Patrick’s Day Nails

St Patrick's Day NailsHow To Get These Nails:

  1. Paint your nails with basecoat. You all do this, don’t you?? I don’t know if I can bear the thought of people not using basecoat AND not wrapping their tips!! Haha. I know some of you are guilty of at least the latter!! :p
  2. Paint your nails with OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls. I used 3 coats I think, maybe 4 because I was applying it kind of sloppily and didn’t want uneven spots.
  3. At this point you can either apply a layer of top coat (I’m using Jessica Brilliance these days) or just let these dry to the touch. I chose to go the topcoat route because that way if I mess up on my nail art I can swipe a saturated cotton ball over it and remove the art but not all the polish. I had to do that on my 4-leaf-clover accent nail.
  4. Use Essie Mojito Madness and a dotting tool to make hearts on all nails but your accent nail. To make hearts with a dotting tool you just make a dot then drag it a little diagonally, then make a dot next to the first and drag it diagonally down to meet the bottom of the first dot. It takes a little practice but is pretty easy. You basically make a V and the rounded edges turn it into a heart.
  5. Using the same green, make 4 hearts together, as shown, for the “lucky” 4-leaf-clover and then drag a little line down for the stem.
  6. When you’ve given your hearts and clover some drying time, apply a final layer of Jessica Brilliance and admire your simple and cute St. Patty’s Day nails. 🙂

I hope you guys like my quick little attempt at festive nails. I have one more design to show you tomorrow so stay tuned for that. If you are going out for SPD, follow this wise advice for the sage ol’ Tracy Byrd (country musician):

“Help yourself to some (green beer, Irish car bombs [but never dirty, trust me], Guiness, Snakebites [mmm]), but obey the lawwwwww. If you drink, don’t drive, do the watermelon crawl (or at least call a cab).”

Let me know if you usually do anything for St. Patrick’s Day and how you plan on doing your nails! As always, thank you all for reading and till next time- Happy Polishing!! 😀

  1. I love these nails!! I’ve been traveling – away from my polish collection and nail tools – for the last week and so I can’t get in on any of the sweet St. Patrick’s Day nails action. This is really cute!

    • Aww that’s too bad you can’t get in on the fun but oh well… there will be another holiday soon enough. 🙂 Where are you traveling? Anywhere exciting? Thanks about the nails! 🙂

      • Visiting family and friends in Massachusetts, all the way from Western Canada! I’ve got my eye on Easter for my next batch of holiday nails, so I didn’t lose too much sleep over the SPD ones 😉

        • Oh wow! That’s a big trip. I’m assuming you flew! 🙂 I’ll look forward to your Easter nails! I have exactly zero ideas so far so… wish me luck! :p

  2. I have not previously heard about these banana shenanigans…have you ever tried it?
My brother and I went to visit our mom last weekend and they had these one-page sheets up all over the place about St. Patrick’s Day. We entertained ourselves by reading them because they were so poorly written and confusing. Our theory was that is was probably one of the staff member’s kid’s school project and they just posted them up. Why, I don’t know, because I really don’t think any of the residents could read them, but, hey, whatever, we at least got some kicks out of them. But, in any case, according to this confusing elementary-school author, you are correct about the three-leaf clover. 😉 If a grade-school kid’s report and Wikipedia say so, it must be true! 😉
I use basecoat and wrap my tips! Does this excuse the fact that I don’t clean up and just rub of the excess with a washcloth in the shower the next day? 😉
MBSW…I dunno, man. I told Cynthia about this previously, and I know this is borderline nail blasphemy, but I’m not sure if I’m into it. I’ve used it twice and it’s like really streaky, yet kind of thick, too. I think I need to try putting some thinner in it and see what happens. I did get my bottle off of eBay, but the collection isn’t *that* old, so I dunno why I got a bum bottle. I wouldn’t have guessed that it’s your base here and it looks so clean on everyone else, but not on me *pout*.
I like that these designs are all freehand!
Last year, I got a group together to go out for St. Patrick’s Day and we had a good time. Since it’s on a Sunday this year, I didn’t ask around. I’m going to see my friend, meet her new(ish) doggie, get lunch, and window shop. I doubt we’ll be drinking because she’s going to her future sister-in-law’s bachelorette party on Friday and will probably be partied out, hahaha.

    • That is funny they posted that St Patty’s Day stuff! Kinda cute but also kinda annoying in a way. Call my Pregozilla! :p You are not a major fan of MBSW??! Oh boy.. I feel like I don’t even KNOW you!! :p I’ll just pretend I didn’t read that, although I am happy to hear about the wrapping of tips and the basecoat. The clean up… ehhh… I used to do that so hey, whatever works for you. 😉 About the banana hangover thing I think Daniel and/or I have tried it but psshhh I couldn’t tell you if it really helped. You know what does help? Not drinking so much. But that’s no fun!

  3. even though you don’t believe it, because we have american presence in my country for almost a century, so we do a lot of the things you guys do (like celebrate july 4th this is a thing i DONT understand at all.. why celebrate the independence of ANOTHER country! weirdos).. in panama we do the same thing in st patrick’s every body is like awww yeaaahhh st patrick’s day green bear awesome, but me, but that’s ok because i’m a hater. LOL. we’re having a bbq on sunday, but that has nothing to do with st patrick’s.. we are having it because summer is ending here 😦

    • That is pretty funny you guys even have celebrations for Independence Day! And to be honest, I’m not surprised you’re a hater! :p I would think that’s sorta weird tho too. A barbeque sounds fun tho… only not cuz it’s the end of summer. Our summer is still a ways off and I am ready!! I can’t wait for some decent weather and sunshine!

  4. I am not planning to do anything on Sunday. My Sundays are usually spent doing laundry, dreading work the next day and crying myself to sleep in a corner. hahahaha I am definitely going to try to do some SPD nails for Sunday. If I’m going to be miserable, I might as well have pretty nails at least. I’m wondering what’s up with Lesley and not understanding our love for MBSW…it’s kind of amazing. I love the mani you came up with…it’s kind of simple yet so cute and perfect. I am pretty sure I sold my bottle of mojito madness and now I want it again. LOL

    • Thanks about the nails! I really love MM cuz it’s such a pretty, clean, fresh green but something tells me you probably have plenty of other green polishes to console you. I’m sorry your Sundays such. I’m not doing anything too exciting, we are watching my brother in law’s dog so they can go out for the night. Cute nails will make me feel marginally better about that, too. Although, it’s not like I can drink so… what would be the point of going out anyway? I don’t think Lesley knows what she’s talking about with the MBSW… she needs to be shown the light. 😉

    • You don’t have it?? I remember when it came out (last spring?) I waited forever to get it but once I did I was so happy. It’s just a nice medium green color… makes me wish for springtime even more!! 🙂

  5. Ag Nics! This is soooo cute! I love the little clover!
I don’t wrap my tips *blush and runs away* I always forget! But I DO use base coat. Always!
We don’t celebrate St Paddys but G has irish in him so he’ll always have a guiness.

    • Base coat is good!! Lots of people don’t wear it, which surprises me but hey- whatever floats your boat! 😉 I hope he enjoyed his Guiness. Daniel is half Irish and he had Guiness as well. 🙂
