Day 26: Nails Inspired By A Video Game- Ninja Turtle Nails

Hey There Polished People!

Gosh, after today we only have 5 more days of the challenge to go! In the beginning I have to say it felt like it was never going to end, and now that it’s almost over it seems like it flew by. I definitely am enjoying Cynthia and I posting our nails every other day instead of every three days. It’s still manageable and enjoyable but doesn’t drag on quite so slowly. Also- we’ll be done just in time to do some Christmas Nails. 🙂 Today’s theme- Nails Inspired By A Video Game was really tricky. At first I wanted to do Mario Brothers nails, but every design I could possibly think of had been done, then I had this genius idea for Pac Man nails and of course like 5 days ago when I was about ready to give them a try I saw the EXACT same nails on Beautylish so those were out. Lots of people gave me suggestions for video game nails but it seemed like everything had been done, like three times over. I tried one design based on Kirby’s Dreamland (which I used to play on my Game Boy) but it was hideous (you can see it at the bottom of this post) and then finally decided on some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Nails. I was quite the fan when I was a kid and remember playing the video game on my Nintendo. I was never much for video games but I remember playing this one quite a bit. I liked that Nintendo game and you know what? I like these nails! They’re different, but kinda cool! Let’s see em! 🙂

Ninja Turtle Nails

How To Get These Nails:

  1. Base coat. This time I’m trying OPI Natural Base Coat. It seemed to work well for me.
  2. Paint each nail with one of the Ninja Turtle colors: Paint your pinky blue with OPI Ogre The Top Blue for Leonardo. Paint your ring finger orange with OPI A Roll In The Hague for Michelangelo (he was always my favorite). Paint your middle finger purple with Essence Break Through for Donatello. Paint your index finger red with Essence Fame Fatal for Raphael. Paint your thumb turtle green with ChG Westside Warrior.
  3. Apply a coat of Seche Vite to all your nails. Allow them to dry thoroughly. You’re going to use tape so we don’t want it peeling off any of our polish! 🙂
  4. When your nails are dry, use scotch tape to tape off a small section at the tip of each nail except for the thumb. Make sure your tape is pressed down well.
  5. Use ChG Westside Warrior to paint inside the different colors, leaving a border of the color around the green. The tape will keep the green off of the tip of your nail. When you’ve applied the polish to the nail you can remove the tape. You should be left with nails that have a green “turtle shell” in the middle and an outline of each different Ninja Turtle color.
  6. Allow the green polish to dry. You can apply a coat of SV to speed it up or just wait till it’s dry.
  7. When your nails are dry, use BM 313 and Konad special black polish to stamp the turtle shell design over the entire nail. Repeat this for each nail.
  8. Apply a final coat of Seche Vite and show your TMNT pride! ;D

Were you a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? I remember playing with the toys, too, not just the Nintendo game. 🙂 Were you much of a video game fan as a child? Are you still? Let me know the answers to all these questions and how you like these nails in the comments below. Thank you all for reading and commenting and till next time- Happy Polishing!! 😀

As promised, here is my hideous first attempt at nails inspired by a video game. FishJesus have mercy.

Kirby’s Dreamland Nails. They were too ugly to even take an outside picture. I like the clouds, just the whole look wasn’t…. right.

  1. I am too old to have gone goo-goo over the Ninja Turtles – but you had to be living under a rock in the US not to have seen them! I recall a # of friends going dressed up as NT for Halloween. These are cute! Love the neon framing!

    • Thanks! It was my first try at outline nails. I’ve seen some turtle consumes and they’re pretty hilarious w the padded muscles and all. Your friends are awesome. 😉

    • Thanks! The Kirby nails would have been better if the picture was better but I just wasn’t feeling it. I’m glad you like my TMNT nails… I was fairly impressed by them! Haha.

  2. Of course I loved the Turtles! The show, the toys, the video game, etc. The nails are a cool take on the Turtles themselves and a video game!
I played video games for a bit when Nintendo came out, but not much after that. I do have a DS that my brother got me for Christmas one year (he found a Hello Kitty DS and he was so proud…it is quite amazing, I must say, and I am hesitant to upgrade to the new version because it won’t be a Hello Kitty one!), but I don’t play it too often. Mainly just Professor Layton (which he hates, haha).
Kirby’s not too bad, but the Turtles are the winner. 😉

    • I would kinda like a DS for the puzzle ish games but other than that I don’t do “games.” What is professor Layton? That’s cute he found you a hello kitty one!! 🙂 Im so glad these nails are like translating and people “get” them. Turtles on a half shell, TURTLE POWER! 😀

      • Hahaha, how ironic, Professor Layton is a puzzle game! 😉 I was trying to be sly and said, “So, I think there’s a new Layton game coming out soon,” and he was like, “Yeah, there is, and it’s not going to be compatible with your obsolete device.” Christmas hint fail! Unless I buy a new DS before then, but I kinda doubt it.
Now I will have the TMNT song in my head!

        • Oh! Well then that’d be just my style! Hahaha. Maybe your brother could get you a new DS for Xmas. I have no idea how much those cost though so maybe they’re too expensive. I also have the TMNT song in my head… For the last two days. Welcome to the club. ;p

  3. You had me at Ninja Turtles in your title.. I was pretty much obsessed with the turtles and still reference and would rock anything Ninja Turtles still todya. Awesome inspiration I totally get it, and they came out awesome!!

    • Yayyy!! The Ninja Turtles are awesome! Between them and some ninja movies when I was little this is why I was a ninja for Halloween so many times! Haha. Thanks about the nails, glad you like them!! 🙂

  4. NICOLE!
    This is AMAZING!!!!
It is my favourite of the whole challenge you’ve done! You did an OUTSTANDING job: 10/10, A+, 100%!!!
It’s beautiful and I love it! I love how you’ve personalised each one to each turtle with the colour borders!

    • Do I get a gold star? Haha. Seriously- thank you so much!! I’m just so happy everyone is like “getting” them. I wanted to make them ninja turtle ish but not too too conceptual so they were weird, but also not like little turtles w weapons painted on my nails. Haha.

  6. There are so freaking cute and totally reminded me of watching TMNT every morning before going to school. Unfortunately, I bombed out today and after 3 different attempts, I gave up. 😦 What a loser! Anyway, as I was telling you last night…nothing is stressing me out. lol

    • Well good! This shouldn’t stress you out, so your ideas didn’t turn out? Big whoop. I’m just lucky these turned out since the kirby ones were so craptacular. Nice reference to Fish Jesus in your post, too, btw. 😉

    • On the thumb I think I just did green w no border and the turtle shell print. It’s been a little while but I’m feeling pretty sure that’s what I ended up doing 🙂
