Hey There Polished People!
Today is our 12th installment of the nail art challenge! Today’s theme should have been the easiest for me because my motto is pretty much when in doubt, put a chevron on it! However, I just couldn’t come up with anything I deemed unique enough and then ended up with a design that looks like an ugly Christmas sweater circa 1993. Now that I’ve made it sound so lovely, let’s see it! Oh- one more thing. It does include my first indie glitter- Dandy Nails Colorblind Squared! Yay for that!! Okay, now we can see the nails.
Ugly Christmas Sweater Nails (aka: Chevrons)
How To Get These Nails:
- Base coat. Never skip this step. Trust me.
- Paint your nails with 3 coats of OPI Kennebunk-Port (for the record this is a really pretty dark red!).
- Apply a coat of Seche Vite and allow your nails to dry completely. You’re going to use tape so those suckers have GOT to be D.R.Y.
- When your nails are perfectly dry, cut a piece of tape (I used blue painter’s tape, you can use whatever) in the shape below and place them on each nail as shown.
- Use Dandy Nails Colorblind Squared to paint the exposed areas of your nails.
- When the glitter is mostly dry, apply a layer of topcoat to slightly smooth it out.
- Use a white striper to trace the lines of the chevron.
- When the white lines are dry, add your final coat of Seche Vite and ta-daaa! You’re done!
Did you notice my lovely white background when I showed the tape on my nails? She makes quite the assistant at times.
Let me know how you liked these nails, and if you’re excited for me that I got my first legit indie glitter!!
Yayyy for that. What should I layer it over?! Don’t forget to check out everyone else’s awesome chevron nails. Click on the button below to check out their designs and go to their blogs! As always, thanks for reading and till next time- Happy Polishing!!!

i loved your nails and your assistant!!
Really? Thanks!!
She’s a nice assistant.
lol now that you said it, they do remind me of a christmas sweater. You should create a nail art challenge in december involving 12 days of Christmas sweaters
You know I’m excited you got your first indie! I’d say layer it over everything! I have Colorblind, the original not the square, and I layered it over everything cause B&W glitter just looks good on anything. I eventually settled on neon yellow and did a bumble poo mani.
I love bumble poos! Hahaha. I’ll probably be doing just that- layering it over everything.
I actually really love your Christmas sweater mani series idea. If I do it do you want in? It sounds quirky and fun. Anyway, think about it and lmk.
Ooh I like your technique! These look awesome
Aww thanks! I just wanted to use my new polish and needed to do chevrons so I combined them. Haha. Glad you don’t think it’s too bad!
I love that glitter polish. I really like the little squares.
Me too! I wanted some square glitter and some b&w glitter so bad!! Thanks!
“…my motto is pretty much when in doubt, put a chevron on it!” Heeheehee.
That reminds me of when I went wine tasting with a friend the day after Thanksgiving. We were all supposed to wear an ugly Christmas sweater. Well, prior to this another group of friends had had an 80s-themed murder mystery party and one of my friends wore this CRAY sweater from her husband’s stepmother. It wasn’t a Christmas sweater, but I borrowed it and wore a tacky Christmas necklace. So I show up in this monstrosity not knowing anyone but my friend and everyone else there looked totally done-up and cute! I was like WTF? Ya gotta commit, people, this is how I roll!
Ugly Christmas sweater circa 1993! Haha! I wouldn’t have thought that, but I can see it
I see myself getting tape all over everything while trying to cut it like that and yelling and hating life! I would also be scared of biffing a chevron when it’s almost all done! I should get some of that painter’s tape, though…it’s a little more substantial and may be a little easier to work with.
I can’t believe I didn’t immediately identify Minnie! I am tired, though. Glad to see that she helped!
I have a similar indie glitter, Dollish Polish Puttin’ on the Ritzzz, and I totally waffle everytime I think of using it. I’m just not sure what to pair it with, which is stupid because, as Frosso pointed out, it goes with everything!
Hahaha ugh don’t you hate when that happens?? You’re supposed to dress a certain way and then everyone like BARELY meets the requirements so they can instead just look like “omg I’m so cute that even this ugly sweater/scary costume/not wearing makeup (yeah right!)/camping can’t make me ugly!” I bet you looked the best. That’s a fun idea though to do the ugly sweater thing at a wine tasting outing. I’ve always wanted to have a white trash party… but our friends who aren’t white will just have to pretend they’re still sufficiently trashy. Haha. Anyway- the painters tape is MUCH better to work w, except that it doesn’t seal quite as well which is completely ironic, so you have to really push it down good like the second before you paint your nail. It’s kind of a toss up between that and regular tape. But with glitter or certain thick polishes you don’t have to worry so then I definitely use painters tape.
Uhm, I thought I had commented on these nails but maybe it was on twitter? Ugh…it’s so hard to remember. I laughed when I saw Minnie because she just wants to be in on the action. I really love black and white polishes. The only one I have that is similar is Sticks N Stones and I kinda really love it.
I have to try it with different colors. In my mind I was like- red black and white = classic. Dark red = appropriate for fall! (I’m REALLY trying to be seasonal, can you tell…?) but then when I put them together with the chevron design I was like “whoa… didn’t I throw a sweater just like this away when I cleaned out Daniel’s closet?” Hahaha jk.. sorta. Anyway I LOVE black and white polishes so I am anxious to use this some more.
