Half-Moon Halloween Nails- 31 Inspired Days of Nail Art

Hello There Polished People!

Today is our 11th installment of our challenge! It’s half-moon mani day!!! And it just happens to be a Halloween nails day too! :) I really like my nails today so instead of chatting I just want to get right to them. This idea really came about when Alaina of The Little Canvas asked me if I had any suggestions for her for half-moon mani day. I, of course, drew up some pictures while I was eating lunch and sent them to her. Well, she rejected my idea in favor of her own (which is WAY cute.. you’ll see) but I decided to try one of my ideas which was doing the half-moon as an actual moon and then making a Halloween scene with a creepy Halloween house silhouette in a dark blue gradient sky. I ended up having a stamp that I could use and I got a new polish that was perfect to use as part of the night sky so it all just came together for me. Ready to see it?

Halloween Scene Under A Half Moon Mani

How To Get These Halloween Nails:

  1. Base coat those bad boys.
  2. Paint your nails with 2-3 coats of ChG Want My Bawdy.
  3. Use a sponge to sponge a bit of a gradient starting at the cuticle and fading out about halfway toward the free edge using Ulta Little Black Dress.
  4. Using Ulta Concrete Evidence and a small brush, paint a very brush-stroke-y half-moon at the cuticle of each nail. (If this is too difficult for you to do, alternately you can paint your nail grey before steps 2 and 3, use a hole reinforcement circle to tape off the half-moon and then continue on from step 2 on.)
  5. Use BM 305 and Konad special black polish to stamp the design on each nail. Don’t be afraid to let the top of the house overlap the moon.
  6. Apply a coat of Seche Vite and impress all the ghouls and boys (yeah.. I know that was lame; it was the best I could do).

If I did these nails again, I would make the background a little less dark, but overall I felt like these nails looked almost exactly like I imagined them. That almost NEVER happens, so excuse me while I pat myself on the back. Haha. :)

Edit: I have entered these into Bundle Monster’s Fright Night nail art contest. Thanks to everyone’s great suggestions these are now named Fright Night on Haunted Hill and you can vote for these nails by clicking here. Thank you so much!! :D

Please let me know if you think these Halloween Nails are as cool as I seem to think! :) I will just cry till my little eyes are red if no on comments on these. 1. These look great, especially in the first pic! I’m glad they came out pretty much exactly as you hoped…it’s like the opposite of a disastercure!

    • Yeah which is usually what happens when I try something that I think is gonna be really cool! Haha. These were a little hard to photograph being so dark but overall I think you can see what they are. :) Thanks!!

      • i think i’ll keep it light as you say, I don’t have konad polishes.. I do have a Sally Hansen InstaDri black..! I think i’ll stamp the houses with that polish..

        • That should probably work. I don’t use the SH black but I bet it works. And yeah w a light base you’ll be PERFECT! :) I can’t wait to see some Halloween manis on your blog (the correct one! Haha).

          • hahahha! i’ll do them the last week of october.. but I told everyone I’ll charge them for doing the manicures..

i’m charging the BCA manis to donate the money to fundacancer right.. and many people that is always asking me to do their nails doesn’t want to pay me for it.. they’re all like, yeah but you always do it for free.. I’m all like, well the money isn’t for me.. but for the foundation.. and they were like.. well.. can we pay only the 5 bucks (im asking 7 dollars, because i need to buy supplies).. i’m not even answering.. but that made me think in how people abuse..!!

  2. I am totally jealous of how creative you guys get with your challenge manis. I think this particular look is my favorite so far. Today I came to the conclusion that I feel way too old to do elaborate things with my nails. I mean, I know that being 33 isn’t like ancient or anything, but I just don’t feel comfortable…like if I was wearing something that a teen would wear. lol I fully acknowledge that this is a completely personal decision and that everyone else should be free to do whatever makes them comfortable since I know not everyone would agree with me. I think it’s like my choice of clothes…I would much rather dress conservatively and classic. So why did I hijack your posts with stuff all about ME? Prolly cause I’m an ass. hehe.

I think that it is so cool that you are entering these nails to the bundle monster contest. Like I said above, I love them. The first thing I thought of when I saw them was Psycho and then I thought of something spooky out of the world of Edgar Allan Poe…maybe the Tell Tale Heart or The Raven.

    • Thank you!! I do get what you mean though. We are about the same age and when I wear something artsy not really like these cuz they’re so dark but like the owls I did tonight… when I wear something like that I feel a little juvenile. I guess that’s why I don’t really like pink. I am all for bright and interesting nails, but there’s some kind of line that I see that makes all pink owls different from a stamped pattern. Idk… but I kinda get you. :) You shouldn’t feel like your nails aren’t as creative though. We are all equally creative you just might have a more sophisticated or grown up style… which is exactly why I wanted you in on this with us. If we all did the same stuff it would be boring as heck. I love your contributions! :)

      • I think I’m even getting shy about my stamping. hahaha I will attribute it to the juvenile cheeky set that I got. I think that if I am going to keep the stamping going, it’s going to have to be very geometric patters…nothing like flip flops or slices of pizza or credit cards. lol

        • Well yeah pizza and credit cards… Those are pretty juvenile but some designs if used the right way might still work. Those nails you posted today were awesome. I’m assuming you weren’t embarrassed about them. I can’t stop thinking of them. :)

          • hehehe…I am ok with geometric patterns…anything that is like that but I don’t really like faces or ice cream cones and all that kind of stuff, you know? I think they may look cute on younger girls but they’re not for me.

            • I feel ya. I can’t use my flower plates cuz I feel like a tween. And I hate myself for just using that word. It’s right below swag and epic. Barf.

            • LOL, I’m way older than both of you and I wear any design I want. I love the little cutesy designs as much as I do the glamorous feminine ones. I tend to wear the cutesy ones on my nails when they are shorter and prefer the more sexy looking manis when they are longer. I guess when you are over 40 no one cares and coworkers and friends will come up and grab my hand to check out my latest mani. That’s cool. I can’t wait to try this haunted house design, I’ve already told people about it, it’s sooo cute! I may have to hand paint mine though if my BM plates don’t arrive in time. I’m going to vote for you right now :)

              • Hey I say wear whatever you want! :) The only thing I’m vehemently opposed to is way too long icky nails. Anything else is ok w me! Haha. I can’t wait till you try the haunted house design! That’ll be so fun. Tomorrow “your” pink and grey plaid nails are up so I hope you like them! :)

                • Pink and gray plaid! Oh how exciting! I just took my polish off today and was debating on which adorably cute mani to do next, and now I think I will just wait and see what is coming up because I will probably decide to do it! This is good though as my nails will have time to soak up more precious moisture now before another round of polish.

              • I think I’ve been 40 since I was a kid. lol Totally cliché but I am an old soul. I think now that I’m getting “older” I feel even more old than normal. I find myself saying stuff like “Kids today…” and then I realize how it makes me sound…but then I realize I’ve been saying that since my early 20′s. haha So I guess that when I personally wear juveline designs on my nails, it makes me feel uncomfortable. Just like when I wear purple eyeshadow…it’s been my favorite for years but I don’t want to look all crazy with it. I don’t know why I limit myself that way but it just makes me feel more comfortable. :) I say that if you like it and you feel good about it, rock it!

                • I mean this in a completely nice way- you saying you felt like a 40 year old from birth practically does not surprise me one bit. You seem extra mature (for the most part ;)) and just way more sufficiently grown up than how I feel. I’m kinda jealous.

                  • haha! It’s so true, though. I have always been this way. I was watching Before Sunset and there is a part where Celine (Julie Delpy) is talking about how she re-read her old journal and that she was surprised at how similar she was to that little girl, still. I did the same. I read a journal I kept from when I was in my mid-teens and I swear to God I am the same person–a little worse for wear and with a lot more “real life” experiences, but I am still essentially the same. What does that say about me? I mean, I haven’t changed in 15+ years? LOL

                    • I re-read some of my journals a while back and mannnn was I pathetic. Re-reading them made me realize how much more confident I’ve become and even though I’m pretty much like the least assertive person I know I see that I have become slightly more assertive. Pretty much all my journals seemed to be centered around guys. Haha.

                    • LOL! Most of my entries were existential angst-ridden…so pretty much the same as my personal blog entries. haha! I felt pretty cool reading Sartre and De Beauvoir at 15…somehow I thought I was very “philosophical” WRONG! I tried, though. Today I had lunch with my friend Nancy, whom I’ve known since we were like…8 or 9…and you kinda just reminded me about guys and how NOT boy crazy I was. Nancy thought that it was weird when we were teens so one day she asked me if I even liked guys or if I was a lesbian. LOL I never let her forget that. I really was so…blasé about anything that kids my age were interested in,

                    • You know what’s funny… I have a cousin who has like NEVER to my knowledge really expressed an interest in guys and I always just thought she was too shy or idk.. maybe didn’t like guys but maybe she’s just like you. That’s hilarious that your friend asked if you were a lesbian. I wasn’t like SUPER boy crazy like some of my friends, but I was definitely interested and always had a boyfriend or at least a crush. I would never think to ask if any of my friends were lesbians though, THAT is something that was not at all on my radar. One girl I went to HS with that was not a CLOSE friend of mine but we were friends and I thought she was totally awesome turned out to be a lesbian and when I found out it totally made sense but back in the day it never even occurred to me! Haha.

                    • My friends and I were super weird and inappropriate so that question was totally normal. hahaha Part of my problem was that I always found guys my age so immature…hence the older man thing. Even if they were cute, I thought they were morons so I was always not really interested in guys…at least not the ones I could date cause you know…dating older guys when I was 15 would have put us in the illegal category. lol Ok, not that it didn’t happen once or twice but whatever!

                    • O.O Do tell! Haha. Jk. I remember your brain crush or whatever the heck you told me about. Haha. You’re just an “old soul” or whatever they say. I’m a… boring soul I think. :(

                    • I actually never mention it to anyone cause…I dunno…it seems wrong now, but it’s not like anyone took advantage of me. Before you get ideas of a 15 year old me dating a 40 year old, it wasn’t that big of an age difference…5-10 years tops.

Oh yeah…Dr. Bonca, the professor I wanted to brain bone. *sigh* You’re not a boring soul!!!!

                    • Dr. BONE-ca…? Really? Hahaha. This is getting better and better. I know it’s probably “bonk-a” but whatever. ;p

    • Thanks Frosso! I just updated this post to include the link to vote…. so y’know… if you are on fb… maybe you could send a little vote my way? ;)
